You may have heard of a Snow Leopard before, but do you know more in depth information about this mystical creature?
The social media has allowed all of us to see and view many wonders, flora and fauna within our home. The current most popular post in social media is the picture of Ms Kittiya Pawlowski where she has captured one of the rarest big cats in the world-the snow leopard.
According to Ms Kittiya Pawlowski, she captured the photograph of the snow leopard around 4-5 am in the morning while she was on the Northeast of Gorakshep.
Many Government and Non-Governmental institution have posted her photos like the US Embassy of Nepal, Animal Planet and more.
According to Ms Kittiya Pawlowski, “ A snow leopard sits atop a chasm above a field of ice pinnacles called Phantom Alley. October 9, the full moon washed the icy Himalayan peaks in ghostly light, obviating the need for a headlamp. Overnight, flurries of fine snow particles filled the air, soaking my sleeping bag in icy dew. Snow leopards are most active around dawn and dusk. At around 4 A.M. I put on my boots and set out. The night had a cold, phantasmal beauty. With 25 pounds of camera gear, I headed Northeast of Gorak Shep and crossed a frozen lakebed. The snowy mountain slopes glittered like they were sown with diamonds.”

With the recent pictures of Snow leopard found near the Everest in Nepal, many people around the world have been interested in this Elusive animal.
Snow Leopard is a beautiful, friendly cat that loves to play. She enjoys being petted and will purr when you do so. Snow Leopard can be a little shy at first, but she warms up quickly and is a very affectionate cat. She likes to sleep in the sun on a sunny window ledge or bed and will often curl up with her favorite toy to pass the time.
Snow leopard is from the genus Panthera is found in central and South Asia. While the population of snow leopard is divided into 4,000-10,000, we are not sure of the actual population due to Snow leopard’s elusive nature.Currently, the snow leopard is rated as a vulnerable animal.
Along with the Snow leopard found near Mt Everest by miss Pawlowski, they have been sighted in Dolpa, Mugu, Manang, Mustang, Taplegung, Shey Phoksundo National Park, Kanjchenjunga Conservation Area, Langtang National Park, Api-Namba Conservation area, Rara National Park and the Khaptad National Park, Annapurna Conservation Area, Rowaling and more. Recent research also shows that there are approx 350-500 snow leopard in Nepal.
According to IUCN, Nepal is the fourth largest home of the Snow Leopard. And before them are China, Mongolia and India. Researches in the Everest region has concluded that some snow leopard like in the National Park while some are outside the range of the national park. Most snow leopard live in the cold mountainous areas. According to hundreds of research on this beautiful creature, most researchers believe that you are likely to see snow Leopard in early morning, dawn, noon and early evening near many cliffs and ridges.
Many of the Snow Leopard’s prey include Himalayan Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thar, Wild Goat, Himalayan Marmot, Siberian Ibex, Musk Deer, Wild boar and more.
In the wild the live upto 15-18 years while they live for approx 25 years in captivity. Their population has been decreasing due to Poaching, and smuggling its fur and many of its use in the traditional chinese medicine. Additionally, melting of snowcapped mountain due to climate change is another reason of the population decrease of the snow leopard
